Course Expectations & Requirements Environmental Systems and Societies is a lab based science course that explores both the science of the environment and the impact humans have on the environment both locally and globally. Students enrolled in IBESS are expected to fully participate in all class activities and assignments and take the IBESS exam in May 2013. All assignments will provide the background knowledge and skills needed to be successful on the exam; therefore, it will be necessary to retain all notes, readings, assessments and labs for the entire year. Each student will be provided a lab portfolio to store completed and graded labs. In addition to the labs conducted during class time, students will participate in a long-term study of Walnut Creek. The Field Study will require students to work in research groups and make a weekly observation for 4 weeks after school.
All school policies on behavior, hats, and electronics use in classroom, academic code and attendance (tardies) will be enforced.
Grading
50% Tests & Quizzes (Short answer, DBQ, Essay)
40% Labs
10% Homework, class work and Environmental Action activities
Environmental Activities will allow students to apply classroom knowledge to the real world. Each 6-week grade period will require students to complete 30 points of Environmental Action activities and a written evaluation of the activity. Possibilities include campus clean up (5 pts./15 min); recycle cell phones/ink cartridges (5 pts each), Beach Clean Up (30 pts) and Household Hazardous Waste (15 pts).
Evaluations must be typed and include the following: Title of activity, date & time participated and how the activity helped increase your environmental awareness.

A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F 0-59%
